2018 OF Clay Thompson Commits to Oakland

Congrats on your new commitment! What is it about Oakland that excites you the most?

What excites me most is the coaching staff they have at Oakland University.  They are eager to create a winning environment and also individual programs that will lead to team success. There is also a great emphasis on academic success on student-athletes. Academics are very important to me, and it was awesome to hear that the coaching staff and academic advisers are always willing to push you not only on the field, but also in the classroom.

You have been with Top Tier for some of your youth and all of your high school career. Talk a little bit about your experience and what playing for Top Tier means to you.

My experience with Top Tier has been unbelievable. Every single coach for Top Tier will push you to get better and better every single day. You know going into every single practice and winter workout that you are going to get better. The environment Top Tier creates is amazing. Most of all, I love going to tournaments and games and leaving everything I have out on the field with my teammates.

Talk a little bit about the recruiting process and how everything went down.

The recruiting process was not how I expected it to be at all. It was very stressful at times, but also very fun. My recruiting process started to heat up with the Division 1 schools after my sophomore year summer. What I loved most about the process was building a relationship with all of the coaches from all different schools. But, when Coach Healey called me from Oakland and I talked to him for the first time, I almost already knew that Oakland was the right fit for me.

What were some of the priorities you looked at when deciding where you wanted to commit?

One major factor playing into where I wanted to commit was a chance to make a difference in the program right away. I believe that Oakland gives me that opportunity and that was a huge factor. Another factor was that I could see myself attending Oakland for 4 years and not having any doubts in my head about my decision. The last, and most important, was the academic programs that are offered.

What challenges do you see ahead of you before you get to campus?

Some challenges I see ahead of me is out working every other outfielder to earn that starting spot as a freshman. The grind only gets harder from here, but I believe with my work ethic, I can earn that starting spot.

What are some of the goals you have set for yourself as a college baseball player?

One major goal of mine is to become a daily starter as a freshman. Along with that, some other goals I have for myself is to be on the All-Freshman conference team. A goal I have not only for myself but for the team would be to win the Horizon League tournament.

Is there anybody you would like to give a shout-out or thanks to?

First off I would like to give a huge thank you to my family and parents for spending endless time and money for my success on and off the baseball field. They sacrifice for me every day and always push me to become a better baseball player and person. Also, Glen Hoffmann for being one of the most dedicated coaches I have played under. He puts in a lot of sacrifice for the betterment of a young group of 17 year old kids. Lastly, I would like to give a shout-out to Matt Plante and Griffin Phelps for giving me the opportunity to play for Top Tier and also helping me with recruiting and pushing me daily to become better.
