Alumni Roundup: Week Nine

The Valincius brothers stole the show this weekend and were the catalysts for their respective teams in a pair of Sunday wins for Illinois and Virginia. Nick Monile lifts UNF to a walk-off win. In the works is a 15-game hit streak for a Tennessee Tech slugger, dating back to last month. Here's what you need to know...

Week Nine

Vytas Valincius
(Illinois) put an exclamation point on a very productive week with an outstanding showing on Sunday afternoon against Indiana. In the series finale, Vytas had three hits - all doubles and drove in seven of Illinois' 15 runs.

The three double, seven-RBI game was just the cherry on top to a week that saw Vytas have three multi-hit games and a pair of multi-RBI games. He raised his average .20 points over four games and now leads the team in that category. He's also the team leader in 2B, H, RBI and total bases.

Tomas Valincius
(Virginia) had a nice, bounce back Sunday afternoon. He threw 5.2 innings against Pittsburgh and allowed just three baserunners, K'ing four, in a near-perfect outing from the Freshman. Valincius picked up his second win of the season as the Cavaliers would shut out the Panthers 18-0 and win the series.

Daniel Pacella
(Illinois State) had a quiet Sunday but that didn't stop him from collecting nine hits on the week between a midweek against Illinois and a series against Evansville. Pacella drove in six over the four-game week to help the Redbirds to a spotless stretch in the middle week of April.

Liam Peterson
(Florida) and the Gators had a perfect week, beating Florida State and sweeping Missouri. Peterson opened the series on Thursday and threw five frames picking up the win to improve his record to 5-2. He allowed a pair of runs on five hits and four walks but K'd seven.

Wes Mendes
(Florida State) threw 5.2 innings in a start against Virginia Tech on Sunday. One run on six hits and four K's would be enough to down the Hokies. With the victory, Mendes improved his record to 5-1 on the season.

On Saturday, John Abraham (Florida State) threw a pair of scoreless frames and K'd four. His efforts contributed to a 12-1 rout of the Hokies.

Noah Edders (Troy) helped the Trojans to another series win, going seven strong innings on Saturday against James Madison. Edders allowed three runs (two earned) and five hits and struck out four. His efforts were more than enough for Troy to run away with a 6-3 final. Troy is a top-20 team in the country according to D1Baseball.com, sitting at 26-11.

Kenny Perez
(Western Illinois) has been on a bit of a tear lately. He tallied 10 hits and six RBI on the week including a grand slam in the series finale on Sunday against UT-Martin. He's upped his average to .315 on the season and has now surpassed the 100-AB mark in his young career.

To no one's surprise, Mack Whitcomb (Tennessee Tech) continues to hit - and hit for power. Whitcomb had two homers in a weekend series sweep against Southern Indiana. That sets his home run total at nine with still over a month to play. He's on a 15-game hit streak dating back to March 21 and doesn't seem to be slowing down, now bumping his average up to .366. Whitcomb and the Golden Eagles now sit atop the OVC standings.

Nick Monile
(North Florida) collected seven hits and a pair of RBI on the week. The most meaningful RBI came on Tuesday night in a walk-off win against UCF. He's hitting .352 in the leadoff spot for the Ospreys.

In an undefeated week for Minnesota, Jameson Martin played a part tallying six hits - two against UST and four against Ohio State. He's now hitting .254 for the Gophers.
