Alumni Roundup: Week Seven

As we close the month of March, Top Tier alums are continuing to flourish in the middle stages of the season. Wes Mendes and John Abraham are a lethal duo in Tallahassee, Tomas Valincius continues to hold down Saturdays in Starkville and CJ Deckinga has a breakout performance offensively in a slugfest against Purdue.

Read up on more outstanding performances from week seven:

Tomas Valincius continued his dominant run on Saturday, turning in another strong performance against Ole Miss. He worked five shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out nine Rebels. Valincius picked up his sixth win of the season continuing to be a sure-thing on Saturdays for the Bulldogs.

Jack Bauer with a strong outing in a midweek win over Southern Mississippi, tossing 1.1 innings in relief. He struck out one hitter across 19 pitches and earned his first collegiate victory with his efforts.

Liam Peterson got the nod on Friday for Florida and delivered four scoreless innings against Arkansas. He allowed just one hit, though he issued six walks, and struck out seven. Peterson has now held opponents to one hit or fewer through four innings in four of his last five starts.

Wes Mendes led the way for Florida State in a 3-1 win over Duke on Friday, bouncing back in a big way after a tough outing the week prior. The left-hander went 6.2 scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out 12, matching his season high.

John Abraham closed things out for the Seminoles and Mendes, tossing the final 2.1 innings to secure the win. He allowed one run on three hits while striking out four, continuing to prove himself as a dependable late-game option.

Cade Kurland pieced together a multi-hit weekend for Florida, collecting three hits against Arkansas. He also drove in two runs during the series.

Steven Milam put together a five-hit week, including a pair of doubles, as LSU secured a weekend series win over Kentucky. Milam is currently hitting .248 on the season and, while he hasn’t fully found his groove yet, his track record suggests it’s only a matter of time before he heats up.

Mack Whitcomb played the hero in dramatic fashion, helping Vanderbilt walk off Tennessee in a 16-inning thriller. Whitcomb dropped down a perfectly executed suicide squeeze to bring home the winning run. After the game, he noted, “Being the guy known to hit home runs, I can also play the small ball too.”

The walk-off was the second of three walk-off wins against the Vols this weekend.

CJ Deckinga turned in the best performance of his young career, launching two home runs against Purdue — including a grand slam. The freshman added a three-run homer later in the game, finishing with a huge offensive day, though Michigan State ultimately fell short in a 16-13 slugfest.

Tommy Egan earned his third win of the season, turning in a solid seven-inning effort against Georgia Southern. He allowed four runs on four hits, walked three, and struck out eight as Troy secured an 11-5 win in Sunday’s finale.

Graham Mastros erupted in the series finale against Evansville, going off for four hits, including two home runs, while driving in six. Mastros is now hitting .383 on the season with eight home runs and 30 RBI, good for a 1.159 OPS.

Jimmy Anderson continues to rake at an elite level, collecting four hits on Saturday. The standout shortstop is now hitting .469 on the season and has extended his hitting streak to 25 games.

Jaden Correa chipped in three hits on the week and launched a home run on Friday against Eastern Illinois, continuing to be a steady contributor in the Eagles’ lineup.
