Super 60 Rewind: Top Performances

The 23rd annual Super 60 is set for Sunday, Feb. 2 at The MAX, and we’re recapping some of the standout Top Tier participants from the event’s history.

The Super 60 is full of talent, year in and year out. It’s an event that has seen countless draft picks and players who have reached ‘The Show.’

We’ll breakdown some recent alums who impressed and improved their stock at this event, along with some of the all-time performances from players who stood out at the event on their home turf.

Joe Benson

Joe Benson, one of Top Tier’s first to make it to the bigs, had one of the top all-time outings at the Super 60. In a 2019 article by Prep Baseball, Benson is mentioned in the following paragraph:

“One of the most tooled-out athletes I’ve covered over the last 15 years in Illinois, Benson was a physical 6-foot-1, 190-pound outfielder and catcher in 2006. He was also the top running back in the state. Benson had the rare speed-power combination. Back then, we didn’t have space to run a 60, but Benson was a 6.5-6.6 runner who punished baseballs. He also was clocked at 93 mph from the outfield. Benson was drafted in the second round with the Twins.”

Benson went on to play with the Minnesota Twins in 2011 and was part of several other organization's farm systems.

Ryan Borucki

Ryan Borucki, 2012 grad and Top Tier alum, showed out during his bullpen at the Super 60. He was also listed in the ‘All-Time Great Super 60 Performances’ by Prep Baseball. They said this about the lefty from Mundelein:

“The 2012 edition of the Super 60 was absolutely loaded with top-level arms. Of all the impressive pitching performances, Borucki stood above the rest. And it’s not just because the 6-foot-4, 180-pounder topped out at an event-best 92 mph, or that he sat comfortably at 90-91. It was his secondary stuff – 83-84 mph cutter and 79-80 mph changeup – that were equally electric. And also because he was all legs and arms, loose as can be, and far from reaching his physical peak. So good was his performance that, despite barely pitching that spring due to an elbow injury, he was drafted in the 15th round by the Blue Jays and signed. Last year he made his MLB debut and posted a 4-6 record with a 3.87 ERA.”

Ben Hernandez

When you think of all-time performances, it’s hard to overlook Ben Hernandez. Hernandez, a RHP from De La Salle, was one of the top arms at the 2020 Super 60. Hernandez reached an event-high 95 mph on the mound and led several other categories. Aside from the velo, the big topic of conversation following the event was Hernandez’s changeup. It was highly regarded as one of the top changeups in the country at the time.

Hernandez went on to sign with the Kansas City Royals after a 2nd-round selection in the 2020 MLB Draft.

Brendan Summerhill

Another recent standout was Brendan Summerhill, a 2022 Super 60 participant. Summerhill displayed plus athleticism and projectable power from the left side. He ran an a top-3 60-yard dash at the event and finished among the leaders in OF velo at 93 mph.

After the event, Prep Baseball had this to say about Summerhill’s showing, “Brendan Summerhill has a pro ready frame with room for added strength at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds. He ran a 6.54 60 and showed power potential from the left side, working uphill through the ball with bat speed that ranked as second best according to Blast (78.2 average).”

Summerhill, now at the University of Arizona, is weeks away from kicking off a big 2025 campaign.

Luke Adams

At the same event, teammate Luke Adams, performed extremely well. Adams ran a 6.73 60-yard dash and finished with an exit velo of 103.3 mph, according to TrackMan – good for fifth-best at the 2022 Super 60.

Adams was atop the OF velocity leaderboard as well, with a 97 mph showing. Adams would have an All-State caliber year and signed with the Brewers after hearing his name called in the 12th round of the MLB Draft.

Other Notable Names

Other names that come to mind are former big leaguers, John Ely and Tyler Ladendorf. Sean Hjelle was a Super 60 participant in 2015, dominated at Kentucky, and is now a member of the San Francisco Giants.

Noah Edders was a recent participant who showed well, having been part of the 2021 roster. Shooter Hunt, Vice Pres. of Scouting for Prep Baseball, had nothing but great things to say about Edders following that day in post-event write-ups.

One thing is certain – there are plenty more players who are in position to pop at this event in the coming years.

Sunday, we turn our attention to Conor Essenburg who is the lone Top Tier player in the event. Wishing Conor the best of luck on the big stage. Make sure to follow Top Tier Baseball on all platforms for coverage throughout Super 60 weekend.
